The Format Painter button works well enough, but it means moving your hand to the ribbon every single time you want to reuse a piece of formatting.
There's a keyboard-only version of the same tool that keeps your hands exactly where they already are.
Here's the trick:
Ctrl+Shift+C copies formatting, Ctrl+Shift+V pastes it — no clicking the little paintbrush at all.
How to use it
- Click into (or select) text that already has the formatting you want to reuse.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+C to copy the formatting.
- Select the text you want to restyle.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+V to paste the formatting. Repeat this step on as many other selections as you like.
Where it helps most
Matching headings pulled from another document, cleaning up text pasted from a website or PDF, or keeping a long report visually consistent without repeatedly reaching for the ribbon.
One thing to watch for
It copies character-level formatting from your cursor's position, not paragraph settings like spacing before or after — for a full paragraph style, apply an actual Style instead.
