A plain bulleted list and a polished process diagram often contain exactly the same information.

Word can turn one into the other automatically, without you retyping a single word into a different program.

Here's the trick:

Select any list and choose Convert to SmartArt — Word builds a designed diagram from the same text.

How to use it

  1. Select an existing bulleted or numbered list.
  2. Look for the SmartArt icon in the selection's floating toolbar, or go to Insert > SmartArt directly.
  3. Choose a layout — process, hierarchy, cycle, list, and so on.
  4. Word rebuilds your list as a diagram using that layout, keeping your original wording.

Where it helps most

Turning a plain list of steps, categories or stages into something presentation-worthy, without rebuilding it from scratch in a separate graphics tool.

One thing to watch for

Long list items can end up cramped inside small diagram shapes. Trim the wording down first for the cleanest result.
