Five Nights at Freddy's started as one indie horror game in 2014 and grew into one of the biggest franchises in gaming, with 12 mainline entries, several spin-offs, and a growing shelf of tie-in books, comics and now two movies. This page covers every mainline game in release order, with what each one changed.

Five Nights at Freddy's (2014)
Released August 8, 2014. The one that started it all: you play a new night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, watching security cameras from a single office while the restaurant's animatronic mascots — Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy — wander the building after hours and try to get in. You can't fight back; all you have is limited power for your door lights and cameras, and the choice of when to spend it. It's built almost entirely around tension and a ticking clock rather than jump scares alone, and it's the game that made “check the cameras” part of gaming vocabulary.
Who you face: Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy, plus a hidden, non-lethal Golden Freddy easter egg.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2
Released November 2014, barely three months after the first game. It's a prequel, set in an earlier, more poorly-maintained location. There's no door to close this time — instead you're given a Freddy Fazbear head to wear as a disguise and a flashlight to check a long hallway, alongside a second cast of older, more battered animatronics (the “withered” designs fans still reference) roaming alongside the newer ones. The pace between released the original and this sequel eventually earned the series a Guinness World Record for most video game sequels released in a single year.
Who you face: Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica and Mangle (a torn-apart Toy Foxy), alongside the older, “withered” Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy from the first game, plus Balloon Boy, the Marionette, and Golden Freddy.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3
Released March 2015. Set decades after the first two games, in a horror attraction built around the old pizzeria's legend. Only one animatronic, Springtrap, actually hunts you this time, but the game leans harder into audio cues and system glitches, and starts pulling the story's real explanation — what actually happened to the missing children — into focus through minigames between nights.
Who you face: only one animatronic can actually end your night here — Springtrap. Everyone else you'll see (Phantom Freddy, Phantom Chica, Phantom Foxy, Phantom Mangle, Phantom Balloon Boy and the Phantom Puppet) are hallucinations that can't kill you directly, but will distract you or trigger system errors if you look at them too long.
Five Nights at Freddy's 4
Released July 23, 2015, originally marketed as “The Final Chapter.” It moves the setting out of any pizzeria and into a child's bedroom at night, with nightmare versions of the classic animatronics that you track by listening for breathing at the doors and the bed. It was built specifically to be scarier than the third game after Scott Cawthon felt fans were underwhelmed by FNAF 3's Springtrap encounter.
Who you face: Nightmare versions of Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy, alongside Nightmare Fredbear and a small plush hazard called Nightmare Cupcake. A separate bonus minigame adds Plushtrap.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location
Released October 2016. A tonal shift for the series: instead of one static camera room, each night sends you through a different task and location inside an underground facility, alongside a new, more talkative animatronic cast led by Circus Baby. It leans further into story than any entry before it, told through phone calls and its own between-night minigames.
Who you face: Circus Baby, Ballora, Funtime Freddy (paired with a small puppet called Bon-Bon), and Funtime Foxy, plus smaller hazards like the Minireenas and Bidybabs. Most of them combine into a single entity, Ennard, by the game's end.
Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator
Released December 2017, sometimes listed as FNAF 6. By day, you run a scrappy pizzeria-slash-salvage business, buying and scrapping broken animatronic parts for scrap money; by night, you defend that same office from whatever you've brought in. It also ties off a huge amount of the series' ongoing story in its ending.
Who you face: Scrap Baby, Molten Freddy and Scraptrap (a rebuilt, more dangerous Springtrap) actively hunt you; a repurposed suit called Lefty plays a quieter, important role in the game's true ending.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Ultimate Custom Night
Released June 2018. A pure challenge mode and a celebration of the series so far: it puts 50 characters from across every prior game into one office at once, with sliders to set each one's difficulty individually, so you can build anything from a gentle warm-up to a deliberately brutal custom night.
Who you face: effectively everyone — Ultimate Custom Night gathers nearly 50 characters from across the entire series into one office at once, with a difficulty slider for each.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted
Released May 28, 2019, for VR and later ported to flat-screen consoles and PC. It's a collection of remade and brand-new minigames pulled from across the series' lore, framed as a VR horror experience someone is playing inside the game's own story — fitting, given how directly it sets up Security Breach afterward.
Who you face: Help Wanted doesn't introduce a new roster so much as remake minigames starring characters pulled from across the whole series so far, alongside a few VR-original hazards.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach
Released December 16, 2021. The biggest structural change in the series: a full free-roam survival game set inside a sprawling entertainment complex, the Pizzaplex, playing as a kid named Gregory hiding from room to room overnight instead of sitting behind one desk. Its Ruin DLC (2023) continues directly from its ending. Chronologically, it's the most recent point in the franchise's story so far.
Who you face: the Glamrock cast — Glamrock Freddy (mostly an ally here), Montgomery Gator (“Monty”), and Roxanne Wolf (“Roxy”) — plus Sun/Moon, the Pizzaplex's dual-personality Daycare Attendant, the human antagonist Vanessa (“Vanny”), and Burntrap as the final threat.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted 2
Released December 2023. A direct sequel to the first Help Wanted, again built around a big collection of VR minigames, including some connected to Security Breach's Pizzaplex setting.
Who you face: like the first Help Wanted, it's built around VR minigames rather than one fixed cast, this time pulling more from the Security Breach era alongside a few new original scenarios.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit
Released August 7, 2024. Developed by Mega Cat Studios and based on the Fazbear Frights story of the same name, it's a 2D stealth game that follows Oswald, a young boy who dives into a ball pit at a run-down pizzeria and comes out in 1985, when the same building was a thriving Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Spring Bonnie follows him back to the present and replaces his father, so Oswald has to return to the past over five nights to bring him back.
Who you face: mainly Spring Bonnie, the yellow-rabbit villain of the story, who hunts Oswald across the five nights, with Freddy, Bonnie and Chica joining the hunt in the 1985 sections.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic
Released June 13, 2025 on PC and PS5, with Xbox and Switch versions following into early 2026. The newest mainline entry, set in 1979 — chronologically the earliest point in the series so far — centered on a shapeshifting animatronic called the Mimic. It's currently the latest game in the story timeline, sitting before every other entry.
Who you face: primarily the Mimic itself, a shapeshifting animatronic, alongside a cast introduced specifically for this game — including Jackie-in-the-Box, Big Top, Nurse Dollie, Party Time Chica and White Tiger.

Notable spin-offs
Beyond the numbered mainline games, a few spin-offs are worth knowing: FNaF World (2016) is an RPG where the animatronics are the playable heroes, a deliberate tonal break from the horror of the main series. Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery (2019) brought the animatronics into the real world through your phone's camera. And Ultimate Custom Night aside, most of the deeper lore explanations across the series actually live in the between-night minigames rather than the nights themselves — worth knowing if a game feels thin on story at first.
What's next
Scott Cawthon has confirmed that Steel Wool Studios — the developer behind Security Breach — is working on Security Breach 2, presumably the next core mainline entry, though no release date has been set. A go-kart racer, Five Laps at Freddy's, has had a playable demo since 2024 and is expected sometime in 2026. A Roblox project, Survival Crew, is being rebuilt after an early beta leaked out in 2023.
