Every heading, body paragraph and title in a Word document is tied to an underlying style, whether or not it looks that way.

The Design tab lets you swap that entire underlying style system in a single click, previewing the result live before you commit.

Here's the trick:

The Design tab's style sets change every heading, color and spacing choice at once — no manual reformatting.

How to use it

  1. Open the Design tab in the ribbon.
  2. Hover over any thumbnail in the Document Formatting gallery to preview it live on your document.
  3. Click a thumbnail you like to apply it.
  4. Use the Colors or Fonts dropdown next to the gallery if you want to adjust the palette or typeface without picking a whole new style set.

Where it helps most

Giving a plain, default-looking document an instantly more finished look, or quickly comparing a few visual directions before settling on one.

One thing to watch for

This changes styles tied to Word's built-in style system. Text you've formatted manually, outside of Heading or Normal styles, won't update along with everything else.
