Writing an email late at night doesn't mean it has to arrive at 11pm and make someone think you expect a reply right away.

Gmail can hold a finished message and release it at a time you choose instead.

Here's the trick:

The small arrow next to the Send button opens Schedule send, with quick preset times or a fully custom date and time.

How to use it

  1. Write your email as normal.
  2. Click the small arrow beside the Send button.
  3. Choose one of the suggested times, or click Pick date & time for a custom moment.
  4. Gmail moves the message to a Scheduled label until it goes out.

Where it helps most

Working outside normal hours but wanting messages to land during business hours, or timing something — a reminder, a follow-up — to arrive at exactly the right moment.

One thing to watch for

A scheduled email can still be edited or cancelled — open the Scheduled label, open the message, and click Cancel send any time before it actually goes out.
