A long column of numbers is hard to compare at a glance — the eye has to jump from digit to digit rather than seeing the shape of the data.
Conditional formatting can draw that shape directly behind the numbers themselves.
Here's the trick:

How to use it
- Select the range of numbers you want to visualize.
- Go to Home > Conditional Formatting > Data Bars.
- Choose a color and style from the gallery.
- Excel draws a bar behind each number, sized relative to the largest value in the range.

Scanning a long column of numbers — sales figures, scores, quantities — without building and formatting a separate chart just to see which values stand out.
One thing to watch for
The bars rescale automatically if you add new numbers to the range later, so one unusually large or small new value can throw off the whole visual comparison.
