Gears of War: E-Day is only days away as of this writing, releasing October 6, 2026. It's the sixth main installment in the series and a prequel, set fourteen years before the very first Gears of War — on Emergence Day itself, the moment the Locust Horde erupted from beneath the planet Sera.

What we know so far

Players follow young versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they try to survive the first hours of the invasion, alongside series regulars like Tai Kaliso and Raven pilot Gil Gettner. Built from the ground up on Unreal Engine 5, The Coalition says it specifically wanted to recapture the brotherhood, brutality, and tragedy of the original 2006 game rather than just modernize its systems.

The campaign and the reimagined Horde Siege mode run at up to 60fps with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, while multiplayer pushes as high as 120fps. Controls have been redesigned for the first time since the series' early days — taking cover moves to the A button, sprinting to a stick click, and vaulting and jumping to Y — aimed at giving players more freedom of movement than the classic Gears formula allowed.

Platforms and access

E-Day is an Xbox Series X|S and PC exclusive (through both the Microsoft Store and Steam), and it's available day one with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium Edition buyers get up to five days of early access starting October 1.

Why it matters

Long-time fans have wanted an Emergence Day story since the series began. Landing it as a prequel, with a rebuilt engine and control scheme, makes this one of the bigger risks — and potential rewards — in the franchise's history.
