God of War: Laufey was revealed with a 20-minute gameplay showing at a PlayStation State of Play in June 2026, and Santa Monica Studio locked in its release date — February 16, 2027 — at San Diego Comic-Con that July. Pre-orders opened on September 29, 2026, alongside the game's edition details.

What we know so far

This is the first time the series has put someone other than Kratos in the lead role. It follows Laufey, also known as Faye — Kratos' late wife, whose death opens the 2018 God of War — as she wakes in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, and sets out on her own journey there. The story runs parallel to the events of God of War (2018) and Ragnarök rather than replacing them.

Combat is built on the same foundation as the 2018 reboot and Ragnarök, but Santa Monica has said it's pushing harder into aerial combat, a style largely absent from the recent games. Laufey can launch enemies airborne and chain combos there, wields magical spells through a new sword, and fights at range with an enchanted bow whose form shifts into a serpent.

She isn't traveling alone: two new companions accompany her through the Everywhen — Phranque, a wisecracking cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon voiced by Perlina Lau. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Laufey/Faye, reprising the role she played in Ragnarök.

Editions and pre-orders

  • Standard pre-orders include the Last Wish Armour Set, a Phranque Golden Leaves appearance, and an in-game resource pack.
  • The Digital Deluxe Edition adds a purple-hued “Dark Alchemy” cosmetic set, among other bonuses.
  • Despite Sony's plan to move to digital-only releases from January 2028, Santa Monica confirmed Laufey will still get a physical disc release.

Why it matters

Director Cory Barlog has confirmed that the next mainline, Kratos-led God of War will arrive after Laufey — and will connect directly to her story. That makes this far more than a side story: it's set up as the bridge into wherever the main series goes next, which is a big reason it's drawing this much attention for a spin-off.
