Diablo V was formally revealed at BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard's first BlizzCon in three years, with Joe Shely — director of Diablo 4 — taking the stage to introduce it as the next chapter for the series.

What we know so far

The premise is a deliberate departure from every previous Diablo: set roughly half a century after Diablo IV, Sanctuary has already fallen and Diablo himself has already won. Rather than racing to prevent an apocalypse like every prior game in the series, players explore the aftermath — a changed world where terrain, monsters, and points of interest can be different each time you return to a previously visited area.

Players also build a traveling caravan of survivors as they go — companions who journey alongside them, act as vendors, and carry their own stories to uncover.

Three classes were shown at reveal: two returning fan favorites, the Demon Hunter and the Monk, alongside a brand-new class called the Plague Knight. More classes are expected to be detailed as development continues.

Diablo V was one of several major reveals across Blizzard's roadmap presentation at the show, which the company mapped out running from Fall 2026 into 2030 — alongside a new StarCraft project and a permanent new World of Warcraft mode.

What's next

Blizzard says it will share regular development updates starting in 2027, well ahead of the Spring 2029 launch — expect more classes, systems, and story details to surface gradually rather than all at once.

Why it matters

Diablo 4 became the fastest-selling game in Blizzard's history when it launched in 2023. A sequel that explicitly abandons the genre's usual safe-town structure is a bigger swing than a typical numbered follow-up.
