The new Fable, a full reboot of the classic Xbox RPG series, now has a confirmed release date: February 23, 2027. Notably, it's coming to PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox and PC — a real shift for a franchise that used to be a defining Xbox exclusive.

What we know so far

Fable was originally targeting an Autumn 2026 window, but Xbox pushed it back to February 2027 specifically to avoid it getting lost in an unusually stacked release calendar that already includes GTA 6, Control Resonant, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and Gears of War: E-Day. In Xbox's own words, the move was meant to give Fable "the dedicated moment it deserves."

The game is being developed by Playground Games, the studio behind Forza Horizon, marking a genre change for the team's first RPG. The latest trailer, shown at the June 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, introduced Isabel, the game's main antagonist, played by Hayley Atwell — described as a hero attempting to right a tragic wrong rather than a straightforward villain. The trailer's final moments also teased the return of Jack of Blades, the original Fable's antagonist.

Why it matters

Fable has been dormant as a mainline series for over a decade. A team best known for open-world racing games taking on a story-driven fantasy RPG — and shipping it on a rival's console — makes this one of the more unusual bets in Xbox's current lineup.
